Alvaro of Arabia
Although watching eyes might have been distracted by the tussle further down the leaderboard between Donald and McIIroy to become Europe’s number one, the battle between Guadiaro’s Alvaro Quiros and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie proved infinitely more exciting. Holing a monster 50 foot eagle putt on the 18th that was, in golfing speak, `travelling,’ Paul Lawrie could only follow in Quiros’s effort for a birdie to finish two shots adrift after a ding-dong battle. Nonetheless, the Scot has enjoyed a welcome return to form in 2011 winning our very own Andalucia Open at the Parador.
For Quiros, rounds of 68, 64, 70 and 67 improved his standing in the Race to Dubai finishing in 6th place. Curiously, of his 6 tournament victories on the European Tour, three have been celebrated on Arabian soil; two coming this year. What is now needed is some semblance of consistency and more work on his short game. When this is improved, and allied to his prodigious talent and driving strength, then we could be looking at a member of the next Ryder Cup team.
