Long haul hope
Although still in the throes of a worldwide crisis, the Costa del Sol Tourist Board is actively seeking to promote our golfing destination. Francisco Amoros, head of the golf department, recently spent an intensive five day stay in Argentina spread between the twin golfing bases of Buenos Aires and Cordoba: the province of the capital boasts more golf courses than the whole of Andalusia combined; one of them – The Jockey Club – has more than 3,000 members.
Argentinian golfers travel abroad to play golf, the most popular destination traditionally being Florida but, it is hoped, the common language and customs will attract them to the Costa del Golf. The worldwide coverage of the World Matchplay Championship at Finca Cortesin a couple of years back introduced them to this championship layout for the first time when they were engrossed by the epic play-off between Ross Fisher and their compatriot, Angel Cabrera.
An agreement has been reached to extend the current ‘Turespaña/Costa del Sol Masters Argentina’ tournament into its fifth year. This was held in the province of Cordoba – home to the aforementioned Cabrera and Eduardo Romero – and enjoys a direct link with Madrid via Iberia. 210 golfers were invited to the tournament necessitating a double shotgun start. Some 700 guests attended the dinner presided over by the Spanish ambassador in Argentina, Mr. Rafael Estrella. Prizes on offer included a week’s stay at hotels owned by the Fuerte hotel chain along with green fees at La Duquesa, Los Naranjos and the Parador. Promotional material was distributed along with a video presentation of our destination.
In 2012, plans are afoot to hold a golf circuit in Argentina (similar to the one currently in Madrid) whereby teams from various golf courses battle it out in Argentina to earn the right to play the grand final on the Costa del Sol in November 2012. This is currently subject to approval given the austerity measures in place.
Further developments are expected regarding preferential green fee rates in low season at courses on the coast along with packages currently being developed by a leading IAGTO tour operator.
