Sergio Garcia star attraction in Tenerife
Whilst many tour players will be busy recharging their batteries for the forthcoming season, or spending time with their families, Sergio Garcia has decided to support a worthy cause and is committed to play in the ‘IV Pro Am Memorial Maria Garcia-Estrada’ taking place at Abama Golf on the 13th and 14th February.
Sergio will be joined by Azahara Muñoz who was instrumental in securing European success during the recent Solheim Cup and consolidated her status in the world’s top 50 by finishing 24th on the US LPGA Tour.
Maria Garcia-Estrada died on 3rd September 2005 after an admirable fight against an aggressive form of cancer. Her fledgling career was tragically cut short after she had represented Spain at national level and coincided with Sergio on various teams. It is expected that money raised from the Pro-Am will be channelled into the foundation (Fundacion Maria Garcia-Estrada) she inaugurated prior to her death to help fight against this rare form of cancer – Sarcoma – which represents only 1% of all known cancers and, presently, does not benefit from any public funding into its causes nor cure.
During the three previous editions of this Pro-Am held in 2006, 2008 and 2010, some 350,000€ was raised to support four lines of investigation; three in Spain and the fourth in the United States. Forty teams comprising a professional and three amateurs will be teeing off in a scramble format.
